This spacecraft aims to observe interference that disrupts global navigation satellite systems from low Earth orbit, with a focus on jamming and spoofing techniques impacting services like GPS and Galileo. The plan is to launch this approximately 32-kilogram satellite on a Falcon 9 rocket in February 2027.

European and Austrian Tech Power BEACONSAT
Led by GATE Space, the BEACONSAT initiative supplies its propulsion system, structure, and thermal management solutions. Founded in 2022 as a TU Wien spin-off, the Austrian firm specializes in spacecraft propulsion, having conducted over 8,000 hot-fire tests in atmospheric and vacuum conditions. The project received around 750,000 euros from Austrian public funds to support its technological development.
Additional specialists provide essential systems for the satellite’s navigation-monitoring mission. Graz-based IGASPIN contributes interference detection technology, while Denmark’s Space Inventor supplies onboard computer hardware. The European Space Agency supports the project through its Marketplace program, which facilitates testing of commercially developed space systems in operational environments for technology demonstration missions.
First Austrian Military Satellite Launch Set for 2027
BEACONSAT’s focus will be on collecting interference data, not on carrying weapons or executing offensive actions. It will monitor signals from orbit, detecting patterns associated with jamming and spoofing. The Defense Ministry’s contribution, disclosed in 2026, is estimated at around 1 million euros. After deployment in 2027, the satellite will operate primarily as a research and technology demonstration tool during its initial phase.
Austria anticipates the February 2027 launch as the start of its first military satellite mission, with SpaceX launching BEACONSAT aboard a Falcon 9 as part of the planned schedule.
